Abstract
In mechanical tests, the force versus displacement record generally contains an initial linear elastic portion. In the analysis, the accurate determination of this linear part is essential for the identification of characteristic values of force and/or plastic displacement. In this paper, an algorithm for the determination of this linear portion is presented. This algorithm is qualified on several experimental curves and on virtual data sets generated by a computer program. Results demonstrate that the algorithm is very robust and is able to determine the linear portion accurately.
