Abstract
The ring shrinkage test is proposed as a new soil testing method for expansive clays to describe quantitatively the soil shrinkage potential. The test provides direct measurements of the linear shrinkage in the form of vertical and lateral changes. In addition, the test provides an alternative test method for determining the shrinkage limit and volumetric shrinkage. The method requires undisturbed samples, and it utilizes the standard oedometer ring of consolidation testing equipment. Description of the proposed test method is presented including details of specimen preparation and data measurements.
