Abstract
Reliable in situ testing during soil exploration is of great help to geotechnical engineers in design considerations. This paper describes the theory and the laboratory test results for determination of the density of a sand with a quasi-static penetrometer by measuring its thermal conductivity. Effects of disturbance caused by the penetrometer have been studied. It is shown that it is possible to obtain the density of sand by precalibrating the penetrometer.
